Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition that affects people with a vagina.
Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an imbalance of bacteria that is normally present in the vagina. A healthy vagina contains many types of bacteria, but an overgrowth of specific types can lead to bacterial vaginosis.
Bacterial vaginosis can happen without sexual contact however; bacterial vaginosis is more common in people who are sexually active and it can be passed on from partners during sex too.
If left untreated, bacterial vaginosis can increase your risk of:
- Getting a sexually transmitted infection (STI), including HIV
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) – causes pelvic pain and pregnancy complications
- Pregnancy complications, including preterm birth, low birth weight, miscarriage
Bacterial vaginosis can be treated with antibiotics, or about 50% of people with bacterial vaginosis get better without treatment.
