Trichomoniasis is not very common in most parts of Australia, but it is more often seen in some regional and remote areas.
Trichomoniasis, sometimes called ‘Trich’, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a tiny parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. It can infect the vagina, cervix (the opening to the uterus), and the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body).
Trichomoniasis is not very common in most parts of Australia, but it is more often seen in some regional and remote areas.
Most people with trichomoniasis have no symptoms.
In the vagina symptoms may include:
In the penis, symptoms are less common but may include:
Trichomoniasis is spread through sexual contact with someone who has the infection. It is most commonly passed during penis-in-vagina sex. A person can pass on trichomoniasis even if they have no symptoms.
The infection may also be passed on when fingers or sex toys with infected genital fluids (vaginal fluid, pre-cum or semen) on them are inserted into another person’s vagina.
Trichomoniasis is unlikely to be spread through oral or anal sex.
You can reduce your risk of getting or passing on trichomoniasis by:

Using a condom or dental dam during vaginal, anal, or oral sex.

Washing sex toys or using a new condom on sex toys if sharing them between partners

Having regular sexual health check-ups. Getting STI and HIV testing every 3-12 months is part of a healthy and confident sex life.
If you or your partner(s) has been diagnosed with trichomoniasis, do not have sex until treatment is completed and symptoms have gone away.
Trichomoniasis is not common in most parts of Australia, so testing for it is not usually included as part of a routine STI check-up. However, it is okay to ask for a trichomoniasis test if you are worried you may have been exposed to it. A health professional may also recommend testing if you have symptoms or if a sexual partner has been diagnosed with trichomoniasis.
Testing is simple and usually involves:
If you test positive, your sexual partner(s) should also be tested and treated to help prevent the spread of trichomoniasis.
