What is Warts (Genital)?

Genital warts are warts on the skin of your genitals (vagina, penis) and perianal area (skin around the bum). They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).  You can get genital warts anywhere around your genitals. Read more about genital warts and HPV on our blog.

Are there any symptoms?

If you have genital warts, they may feel like lumps and bumps around your genitals and anus (bum). These are usually painless.

How do you catch it?

You can catch genital warts by skin to skin contact, through unprotected oral, vaginal, or anal sex with someone who has genital warts.

Let's talk about prevention

Condoms help stop you catching or spreading genital warts. But remember, they don’t cover all the areas where the genital warts can be found.

  • Girls and guys- you can get a vaccine that protects you from HPV. This is the virus that causes genital warts. This can give girls very good protection against cervical cancer. It also gives good protection against anal cancer in guys and girls.

Make sure you get regular STI check-ups at your doctor to find out if you have genital warts.

How to get tested and treated

You can find genital warts by looking for warts on the skin around your genitals and bum. Your doctor can advise you on treatments for genital warts. If your current partner has noticed any lumps or bumps they’re worried about they should see their doctor.
