Home › Forums › Sex & Relationships › Survey results: Attitudes towards consent
Results from a survey conducted by Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety have been released.
A few key points from the findings:
– 1 in 7 young Australians think a man can force a woman to have sex if she initiated the interaction but then changed her mind
– 1 in 4 believe that ‘revenge porn’ is the fault of the women who took the photo, rather than the person who shared it without consent
– 1 in 3 young men believed ‘many’ women who claim to have been raped had consensual sex and later regretted it.
Are you surprised by these results? What do you think has to change about our attitudes, culture or the way we talk about sex and relationships for these attitudes to change?
WOW! Um yeah, I’m very surprised by these results @aunt_flo! It’s creating such an unhealthy perspective around rape and rape culture – thinking forceful sex is okay! Shocked. Consent is a linear concept!!!! I think that message needs to be pushed a lot harder, rather than just ‘consent matters’ – consent matters, and can change at any point in time!
Gosh these are really surprising. They are much higher than I would have thought. I find it super crazy when you put these numbers in perspective, for example, that statistically speaking that one of my four brothers would believe that saying about revenge porn. It’s really staggering and quite shocking actually.
In terms of how we change attitudes towards these issues I believe consent should be the basis of any sexual education. Set clear lines and further project consent as an unambiguous and ongoing concept.
