What is STI testing? STI testing is the process of running medical tests to check for any sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is quick, easy, and confidential. Most STI tests only require a blood test and either a self-collected swab or a urine sample. Why is STI testing important? […]
It’s Valentine’s Day National Condom Day! It’s no coincidence that Valentine’s Day and National Condom Day fall on the same day… but in terms of which one we’re celebrating, well, that’s a no brainer. Here at Play Safe, we’ll take any excuse to celebrate condoms, but today, on National Condom […]

Who’s ever heard of ethical porn before?
Recently on Triple J (Australian radio station) they had a ‘porn week’, and recently I’ve noticed they’ve been posting about sexual health and getting regular STI checks which is awesome to see a main stream media outlet that a lot of you people follow promoting sexual health and talking about things such as ethical porn. Here’s an article they published about ethical porn https://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/ethical-porn-set/11452732
I found it interesting how they talk about paying for porn and how free porn can potentially be unethical. What are your thoughts on porn and ethical porn? Do you pay for porn? Would you pay for porn? Was there something else you really enjoyed about porn week?
@goldenrose how great was porn week! I loved it.
I think ethical porn is fantastic! I love the work of Erika Lust, particularly her XConfessions series (people send in their fantasies and she creates them as film!). I haven’t yet bought a subscription but I’ve watched lots of clips for free and in trial periods. It’s just about biting the bullet to actually pay the money, maybe it’ll be a Christmas gift to myself.
I’ve found the films themselves much higher quality and the performers look so much more ‘real’. All sorts of bodies, faces, body hairstyles and emotions – it’s so refreshing!
@sextronaut TOTALLY AGREE!!
I love ethical porn! I usually pay (its worth it) for porn from Erika Lust I would totally recommend checking her out. Its really nice to see porn with women actually enjoying themselves and diversity isn’t fetishised. Erika gets it right!
I hadn’t heard of ethical porn before, but I have heard of feminist porn, which seems to have a lot of similarities – consent shown on-camera, condom use, affection instead of aggression shown between partners. I would love to see it become more mainstream. It seems like sexual trends and behaviours can sometimes stem from porn, so it would be great to have healthy examples for people to model their behaviour on.
I’ll have to check out Erika Lust then!
@sextronaut that’s a really good point about biting the bullet when it comes to paying, I feel like that would be the main barrier for people accessing ethical porn especially when there are loads of free options available but I think it’s worth it.
@aunt_flo that’s so true! How good would it be to see healthy examples shown in mainstream porn?! That’s an interesting point too about consent and condom use shown on camera which is something you don’t really see much of in mainstream porn which is a shame.
@goldenrose funny you say that today because I totally bit the bullet this morning! I’m subscribed to the Erika Lust Store emails and I got a 75% discount code sent to me last night so I used a voucher that I had to treat myself to a whole collection – 50 short films for super cheap! I’m so excited to start watching them!
@goldenrose Porn week was so good! My gf and I ended up watching some female centric/orientated ametaur porn as a result (though I really can’t help watching it and laughing??). Ethical porn is so important! Sex work is real work and deserves credit and payment!
I don’t usually buy porn though, just because I find it difficult to watch because I can’t seperate myself from thinking about how they’re doing that as a job and have probably been shooting the same scene for a few hours. Does anyone else do that?
This conversation is so refreshing!! It’s very exciting to hear ethical porn discussed as something that everyone can enjoy, and not just the typical male gaze, exploitative phenomenon…
@tea I definitely understand what you’re saying, but it still somehow works on me! I have not watched a lot of porn, so I often feel like my body reacts involuntarily.
My little secret though- if you are an auditory person. There is a whole corner of Youtube (under the ASMR banner) of people making orgasmic sounds, role-playing etc, but it is only audio. I like this because it feels ethical in the sense that the makers are individual creators and will benefit directly from the consumption, or so I am assuming. I find this to be a soft porn alternative, that’s also free!
Anyone else have little tips like that?
@earthmama that’s a good tip! I’ve also heard of erotic podcasts/audio books too but I’ve never checked them out.
I’ve always found it hard to get into mainstream porn as I guess I find it either unbelievable or degrading so I think ethical porn is the way for me!
@earthmama I freaking love audioporn.
I thought I would report back on my experience with some of Erika Lust’s ethical porn! I’ve only watched one volume so far (there’s 10 to get through, talk about bang for your buck 😉 ). I have to say, with this porn I’m in absolutely no rush to switch it off after I’ve reached orgasm. With free porn sites I’m usually immediately grossed out by what I’ve been watching once the arousal has dissipated. With this porn, it’s so beautifully filmed and properly hot that I just continue watching it after I’ve settled. Some of the films I’ve seen have been a little bit ‘indie’ for my liking, but others have been right up my alley.
I highly recommend it!! Invest for quality, it’s so worth it.
@sextronaut IT’S CALLED AUDIOPORN?? This has made my week!!
I am also so with you on wanting to turn the stimulus off once arousal has dissipated, and am totally FASCINATED that you have wanted to keep watching. I’m a little interested now…
@earthmama it is! There’s different types, too. You can seek out erotic stories/roleplay kind of stories OR just listen to people masturbate/have sex. They’re both super fun!
And yes! It’s actually amazing.
