After years of hard work, it’s finally time to let loose and celebrate! But while you’re having the time of your life, it’s important to ensure that if you meet someone you like, you’re both having as much fun as each other.  

What is consent?

Consent means getting clear permission to do something. In the context of sex, it means that both people understand what’s happening and are completely comfortable with it. 
 
Consent is essential in many aspects of life – from asking to borrow something, to posting a photo of someone on social media, and importantly when it comes to sex or any sexual activity. It ensures that everyone involved feels safe and respected.

What does consent look and sound like?

Consent can be verbal, such as saying “yes” or expressing pleasure (“that feels good”). It can also be physical, like showing positive body language, touching, or initiating contact. Both forms work, but it’s important to communicate clearly and not make assumptions. If you’re not sure, ask. There’s nothing wrong with checking in to make sure both of you are on the same page and still want the same thing.

Can consent be withdrawn? Can I change my mind?

Yes, consent can be withdrawn at any time – even during an activity that both of you previously agreed to. If someone changes their mind, it’s critical to respect that and stop what you’re doing immediately. 

When can someone not give consent?

There are certain situations where a person cannot give consent. This includes when someone is: 

  • forced, pressured, blackmailed, or intimidated into participating in sexual activity 
  • sleep or unconscious 
  • affected by alcohol or drugs that they cannot think clearly or make decisions 

If any of these things are going on, it’s impossible for that person to legally give consent. Engaging in any sexual activity without clear and voluntary consent is illegal. 

Important reminders about consent

  • Past consent doesn’t equal future consent. Just because someone has said “yes” before doesn’t mean they automatically agree to it again. 
  • A person can change their mind at any time. It’s always a good idea to check in and make sure your partner is still comfortable and keen about what’s happening. 
  • If someone is drunk, high, unconscious, or asleep, they cannot give legal consent. 

Remember, consent is about respect, communication, and ensuring a positive experience for everyone. Stay safe, have fun, and take care of each other!
