Bottom, ring, anus, butt or arse…

Whether male or female we all have one! And just like our genitals, our anus is very sensitive and can be part of sex.

Anal sex is when an object is inserted into the anus (yours or someone else’s) during sex. It can range from just touching the outside with a finger to inserting fingers, sex toys or a penis into the anus.

The anus is a very sensitive area, and just like any other new activity, it’s best to start off slow and see if you like it.

Exploring on your own first is a safe way to try it out.

If you want to touch your partner’s anus you always need to check that it’s ok with them first.

Just like other sexual behaviours, some people find it pleasurable and some people don’t. It’s important to know that anal sex doesn’t make you gay. A lot of heterosexual people enjoy anal sex.

Anal sex is no different than having sex with any other part of your body. You need to follow some basic hygiene. Most people wouldn’t like to have sex with a dirty hand, penis, or vagina, or when they really needed to pee. It’s the same with anal sex. It’s a good idea to do a poo and wash the area before sexual activity. It’s normal to see a little bit of poo around when having anal.

Just like vaginal sex, STIs can be passed on during anal sex. So, using a condom when having anal is a very important part of staying safe. Many STIs have no symptoms, so whether you’re bi, gay, or heterosexual, if you’re having anal sex you should get tested for STIs. It’s extra important that you use lots of water-based lube too, as the anus has very little natural lubricant.
