What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when your penis usually or always won’t get fully erect (hard) or won’t stay erect when you want it to.
Everyone with a penis will have the occasional trouble getting or keeping an erection over their lifetime. It can be caused by a night of heavy drinking, stress, being tired or just not feeling aroused enough in the moment. This is NOT erectile dysfunction. While it may feel awkward or frustrating, it’s nothing to worry about.

That awkward moment…

Sex can make us feel pretty vulnerable. It’s hard if your body isn’t performing the way you want it to. Great sex happens through practice, experimentation and communication. Too much pressure on any one part of sex is a definite mood killer. If your penis isn’t cooperating just now, focus on giving your partner pleasure in another way. You can always try again in a little while.

Where do erections come from?

Despite popular belief, erections don’t simply happen on demand. Sexual arousal involves the brain, thoughts and emotions, hormones, nerves, muscles and blood vessels. ED can happen if there’s a problem in any one of those areas.
If you’re continuously struggling with erections, don’t waste your money on sprays or potions, it’s important to see a doctor to find out where the problem is and get the right help to fix it.

What causes erectile dysfunction (ED)?

ED can be a sign of serious health conditions like clogged arteries or heart disease so it’s important to tell your doctor about it. For young people though, it’s much more likely to be related to:

  • Anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions

  • Relationship problems and/or trauma

  •  Certain prescription medications

  • Alcohol or drug abuse

  • Smoking

  • Hormonal conditions

If you’re struggling with ED, you’re not alone. Talk to your doctor for advice about what sort of treatment might be right for you.
